I’ve always loved visiting upstate New York, but New York City has a special place in my heart. I love visiting any time of year, but winter is a great time to take it all in, and here are a few reasons why.
This post is a collaboration. All opinions are my own.
It’s been a minute since we’ve visited New York City, but I’m feeling the travel bug so I think a trip needs to be in our foreseeable future. I love that the city has true seasons, and winter is so pretty there. Here are a few reasons you should definitely try to visit New York in the colder months!

Central Park is wonderful anytime of the year, but in winter? With snow? I want to ice skate, or just wander around. Try snow-shoeing, ride the carousel, maybe the Central Park Zoo. But if you’re really looking to get away from it all, while still in the middle of the city, this is the way to go.

Pro hockey! The New York Islanders call Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn home and it would be so fun checking them out in a home arena. It’s been a few years since I’ve been to a hockey game in person and they’re pretty exciting!
Broadway shows can be seen all year round, of course. But the colder months is a great reason to do something indoors. (Feel free to surprise yourself with what shows are available day-of show, and a little less expensive. It makes the whole show experience that much more fun.)
See the ball for the New Year’s Eve ball drop. I remember seeing this several years ago, when it was indoors. But if you go this month you can check it out just before 2020! If you’re in the area for New Year’s Eve, I would even stick around for midnight because what an incredible experience to just BE there.
There’s still time to take in the Christmas lights and decorations around the city. Drive to one of the boroughs to get an even brighter experience.
You also have the option of driving just outside of the city for a fun winter wonderland experience!
