another race down

Remember when I said I was taking a break from running? I lied. I signed up for the Thomas Wolfe 8k race that took place this morning.

First though, I managed to get sick this week. I think it’s a sinus infection. I have a doctor’s appointment set for Monday afternoon (and will cancel it, if it seems to go away.) I’ve been getting progressively worse, and I hate running when I’m sick.

Second, I freaked out in the car when I wasn’t sure if I had my iPod. Found it in my purse, laid it back down and when I parked, I got out of the car, slammed the door and heard a weird noise. My iPod had been in my lap (I thought I had set it on the seat next to me) and the ear buds were crushed in the door. Dammit. The right one doesn’t play at all, and the left one still played. Thank goodness. I could not go through another race with no music.

The race:
Starting out at Thomas Wolfe’s home in downtown Asheville, we ran through downtown, through Montford, through the cemetery where Wolfe is buried, and back into downtown. It was awesome.

My goal:
Finish under an hour. Then, it was finish under 55 minutes. Soon into the race, it was finish under 50 minutes. My end time was 49 minutes and about 46 seconds. Not too bad. Now I’m waiting on the official results to be released.

After the race, I ran a few errands (Target) and made it back home. We’re still experiencing a gas shortage, so I don’t want to drive all over town looking for a shelf I saw in South Carolina (that I should have bought last week.) I do need to rest.

Oh and I think I found my next race. Power of Pink – a relay that benefits the Haywood Regional Medical Center and offers free screening for breast and cervical cancer. Awesome cause. I’m just looking for four others to run the relay with me. It’s 4 miles per person and the race takes place November 1. I can’t wait to form my team, and make shirts for us to wear šŸ™‚

Update: Here I am! I’m on the far left, rocking the pink.

  1. Tom – I have no idea why they chose 8k. I believe 8k is about 4.96 miles. Strange distance, and my first 8k ever. And, I believe I did beat 158. Kind of cool šŸ™‚

Shannon – thanks for the comment about the iPod! I’m glad that I had Kate Nash singing to me while I ran. I was a little bored through part of downtown (I see that every day…) I ran the half marathon without music and that was TOUGH!
