being tourists in our hometown

My dad and stepmom Gail stopped in Asheville on Sunday, on their way to Florida. This was good for so many reasons. First, we never see them. Once a year is the most we usually see them, and this was the second time this summer! Hopefully we’ll be visiting more often, since the trip has been cut in half. Second, they needed a place to rest and I think they got that in our house. 🙂

We did a lot of hanging around the first half of the day. Had lunch at Lucky Otter, showed them my office and bought a few groceries before settling into the house for a couple of hours. Once the sun came out, we decided to head downtown.

It was SO much fun to be a tourist in Asheville! I’ve lived in the city for 22 years and I tend to take it for granted. There was a worship service taking place in one of the parks downtown (versus the normal drum circle), street performers all over the place and really fun stores to check out – and this was all on a Sunday evening.

We managed to stop at the Chocolate Lounge, which I have actually never been in (been by there, but never stopped.) Yum is all I have to say:

We played with the smile feature on my camera, and this is what I ended up with:

Headed to the heart of downtown to view the construction taking place, and took this picture of our city hall:

Walked over to the Thomas Wolfe house and got these pictures:

And we ended our evening with a walk through the Basilica downtown, just as a service was ending. (Sorry, no pictures.) We then hit up Target where I ended up buying Chloe a harness and bungee leash to take her outside. More on that this week. Just know that she is not a fan.

Finally, we made it home and cooked dinner. Salad with lettuce and cucumbers from the garden, and chicken. I ended up making green beans after finding beans in the garden. (I never look for them, and now I’ll be checking!!) After dinner, Kenny and my dad decided to do a taste test with cashews. We had an Aldi brand of cashews, and my dad bought the Planters brand. It was actually hilarious watching them…and a clear difference between the two brands.

Finally got to bed and had to return to work on Monday morning. I booked my dad and Gail a hotel room in Savannah for Monday night, but haven’t talked to them yet. (They were supposed to be in Jacksonville today.) They’re still living in a world with no cell phones. I’m hoping we can break them of that this week.

So. A fun 24 hours! And I hope we get to do it again soon!!
