best friends

This past weekend, some of my high school classmates organized a reunion/picnic – and not many of us showed up. I really didn’t mind, as two of my best friends from high school were going to be there (I managed to convince Stephanie to come at almost the last minute.)

I have several best friends. Several from my high school days, and close friends from my post-college days. These girls, though, have known me since middle school. Seventh grade, to be exact. (April completed our little circle, but she was out of town this past weekend.)

One of the last times we were all together was probably in 2004. I had recently met this guy and was excited to introduce him to my friends. Everyone just happened to be in the same city at the same time. (That “guy” would later become my husband.) There were five kids between the four of us – all girls – and it was such a fun afternoon. Stephanie was the one to point out that I’ll be the first to have a boy among our group. One of the best parts of having McLittle now is that Missy just moved back to the area, April’s still in the area, and Stephanie is relatively close to Asheville. I’m hoping that we can have our own mini-reunion this fall when McLittle arrives.

I love that these girls have been my best friends since seventh grade – a grade that my husband has taught, and one that I know I wouldn’t want to re-live. These girls made it through high school with me, and somehow 15 years post-high school, we’re still friends.

For now, the reunion with Stephanie and Missy will have to suffice. It’s a little crazy to think that next time the four of us are together, we’ll be adding a boy to our group – and not just a husband/boyfriend-type, either!
