I have spent most of my life in the mountains of North Carolina and starting in high school, my mom would pack us up to spend a week at one of NC’s many beaches. She definitely looked at family-friendly locations, and I remember our trips fondly. I met my husband almost 15 years ago, and his family is from the coast of NC, so my trips became more frequent! Today I’m filling you in on what I consider to be the best NC beaches to visit this summer.
We’ve frequented spots along the coast that are jam packed to a little more secluded. This summer, I encourage you to get in your car and visit one of these spots near Wilmington, NC!
Carolina Beach is a quick drive from Wilmington and is less built up with hotels and restaurants. We always rented a house within walking distance of the beach, and were able to make our meals at the house, saving a little money in the process. Because it isn’t over developed, the beaches can be less crowded.
There are plenty of rentals and restaurants in Kure Beach, and a lot of history! Visit the aquarium (kids will love it) and then head over to the public access point for the beach. Fort Fisher is in this area as well. We took our kids to the NC Aquarium over spring break a year ago and they had the best time. The ocean was cool, but still enjoyable for them (they at least walked in the water.) It wasn’t too far of a drive from my in-laws, and we didn’t have to deal with a lot of crowds, even over spring break!
Wrightsville Beach is probably the busiest of the three, has more hotel and restaurant options, but is easy access from Wilmington. If you’re staying in town, this is great for a quick trip. You don’t even have to stay the whole day! This one is maybe 10 minutes from downtown Wilmington.
Ocean Isle Beach
This beach is about an hour south of Wilmington, but worth it. A little deserted (do you sense a theme with my favorite beaches? I love not over-crowded beaches!) and this may have been one of the first we took our daughter to a couple of years ago. This town actually is not far from South Carolina, but you don’t get the Myrtle Beach crowds. This photo was taken over the July 4 holiday – and you can clearly see how many people were nearby.
