Philadelphia is a fun and historic city and should definitely be experienced at least once (if not more often.) Following are a few budget-friendly (free!) and historic places you should check out in Philadelphia.

It’s been almost 10 years since my husband and I visited Philadelphia. That trip was actually to attend and participate in one of my closest friend’s wedding, and it ended with us being stuck in the airport during a blizzard. We had been married two years, had bought our house just one year prior and had no kids yet. The trip was fairly quick, but we got out and saw as much as we could of the city in the 36 hours before the wedding and now looking back at the photos, I can’t wait to take our kids there one day!
Independence Hall
When we visited, we stayed in Old City, and we were within walking distance of Independence Hall. You can get tickets the day of your tour (for free) or you can reserve tickets ahead of time for a dollar.
Liberty Bell
You don’t actually need tickets to look at the Liberty Bell or take the short tour. We initially thought it was part of the Independence Hall tour, but it wasn’t. It’s right next to it, though. And it’s pretty interesting to see. (Bonus for the kids – a history lesson they aren’t soon to forget!)
Museum of Art
Why, yes, I did want to see the steps Rocky so famously ran up. While we didn’t go into the actual museum, we walked all around outside, learned a little more about the city and the museum, and snapped some great photos.
Poe’s Home
Edgar Allan Poe lived in Philadelphia for six years, and this is the only house of the five he lived in that is still standing. It’s about a mile from Independence Hall, so we drove to it. You can do a self-guided tour of the home, or have someone lead you through. Admission into the house is free, and it’s fairly limited hours (Friday through Sunday, and closed during the lunch hour.) It was SO worth the trip.
