I have a cousin getting married in roughly 2.5 weeks. Months ago, I began making our travel arrangements. Hotel reservations were made first, and then the precarious flight arrangements were being made. The husband was going to be in Durham for a week before we had to fly out, so I made sure he was flying out of Durham and returning to Asheville.
I scheduled my flight a month later – going so far as to have us meet up in Atlanta, so I wouldn’t have to fly to New York entirely on my own, and I’d have someone to help with my luggage when it needed to be placed in the overhead compartments. (In Asheville, the plans are small, so the luggage is automatically checked planeside.)
I even purchased the travel insurance for both of our flights, in the event something bad happened with me and McLittle. I’ll be 31 weeks pregnant when I board that first plane.
And then the state budget ripped our education system to shreds. Again.
We knew that the two year program that he was a part of was being cut in July, but he received notice that June’s session was “optional.” Good, because he has a flight to catch. And that wasn’t optional.
Today, he was notified that June’s program was canceled – even though the funding isn’t technically supposed to run out until July.
I should do a whole post on how wrong I think it is that we’re cutting so. much. money. from education, but I’ll save it for another day (I need to make sure my husband still has a job, and that our friends are still employed. As it stands, many of my husband’s colleagues won’t have jobs come August.)
Right now, I’m just trying to figure out why travel insurance is even an option when it isn’t going to help cover a big change in travel plans. And how car rental companies can get away with charging you half of a month’s car payment to drive a car one way?
Delta wants to charge $258 to change his starting location from Durham to Asheville. National Alamo wants to charge over $110 to drive a car 4 hours. I just found out that I can purchase a new one-way ticket cheaper than I can just change the flight.
I just want to send my bill to the governor.
