This Cat in the Hat puppet is a fun paper craft for kids!

I’m back with another paper craft – this time, a Cat in the Hat puppet! My youngest is in Kindergarten and she comes home with a lot of different paper crafts, and I love the different themes her teacher has been using this year. I know they will be doing a lot of projects surrounding Dr. Seuss books soon, and I think this Cat in the Hat puppet would be fun and easy enough for her teacher to do with the kids.

It’s also a fun little project I can cut out and let my kids do at home. We’ve had a LOT of time at home lately, and there’s only so much screen time I can manage.

What you need to make this Cat in the Hat Puppet:

  • Print this template
  • Colored paper
  • Glue
  • Sharpie
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
Steps for making your own Cat in the Hat paper puppet.

How to make a Cat in the Hat Puppet:

Step 1 – Select black, white and red colored construction/craft paper for the Cat in the Hat paper puppet. Trace the strips, bow pattern and the small round shape on the red paper, trace the face, inner ear patterns and the 2 round shapes (paws) on white paper. Trace the rest of the patterns on black paper. Cut out the traced patterns.

Step 2 – Attach the white face pattern in the middle of the head cutout. Attach the inner ear patterns in the middle of the ear parts of the head. Attach the small red round cutout in the middle of the bow pattern, attach the strips on the hat cutout horizontally and attach the white round cutouts on round parts of the 2 separate leg patterns (upper legs, used as arms for the puppets).

Step 3 – Attach the head pattern on the top side of the body cutout and attach the 2 separate legs on both sides of the body cutout.

Step 4 – Attach the bow under the head, on the neck part of the paper cat. Trim the extra sides of the red strips attached to the paper hat.

Step 5 – Attach the hat on the top side of the paper cat’s head.

Step 6 – Use a sharpie to draw the face of the paper cat on the white face part.

Step 7 – Attach the tail cutout on the backside of the paper cat, making sure that it is visible from the front side.

Step 8 – Not pictured: Attach a craft (popsicle) stick to the back with glue.
