cookout/birthday par-tay craftiness

My husband had a birthday this past weekend and on Thursday I decided I should do something crafty to make it slightly more special (it was already special because several of our favorite people were going to be at our house celebrating him instead of going to Bele Chere Saturday night.)

On Thursday night, I spent some time in front of the television watching Project Runway, and started crafting. I had several things from Pick Your Plum that were dying to be used. First up, though, I made a couple of poms for decoration. Two of the four saw the light of day (the green ones I made did not turn out well.)

And I then thought to myself, “self. What can we make with bakers twine and washi tape?” So I made a teeny tiny bunting for the cake. I had the skewers already and the twine and washi tape came from Pick Your Plum. The husband likes orange, I like orange with blue (so the twine is blue) and I thought the birds would be funny. (Have you ever seen Portlandia? There’s a bit about “put a bird on it” and that’s what this tape reminded me of.) So I put a bird on it.

When my husband saw the bunting, he didn’t get it. He asked me what it was and I said it was just for decoration and he said, “is it like a finish line or something?” Um. No. It’s just to be pretty.

I bought these small chalkboards on Pick Your Plum with hopes of using them for something. I finally found a use (and I plan on using them again for my son’s birthday party!) They have a clip on the back (basically a clothespin) but the others I have are the boards attached to skewer sticks. Genius, I tell you.

I had a birthday banner I made for my mom’s birthday last September, so I hung that up.

And I think that ended my craftiness for this party. We kept things simple for food (hamburgers/hot dogs/cake and friends brought sides.) The entertainment was one another. The kids were able to run around outside and it only rained for a few minutes before the sun came back out. It was a good day.

  1. I LOVE Pick Your Plum. I have gotten so many products from them that I use for birthday parties or get togethers, even gifts for friends/families.

It turned out really cute – I love the bunting! And my husband would have responded the exact same way, I’m sure of it!
