Early in the school year, we were asked to collect Box Tops for Education® for my son’s class. The classes had a competition for who could bring in the most, and I enlisted the help of family members to collect Box Tops for several weeks. It wasn’t difficult to find all of the Box Tops in my house – we have a lot of products from cereal to taco kits to toilet paper that have the Box Tops on the packages. I sent in hundreds of them (and I never did hear how that class competition went.) I was happy to help the school, though, as I know that our schools need all of the extra help they can get.
There is now an app that allows you to earn extra Box Tops for your school – from a receipt and your phone! Now through 1/31/18 you can earn an extra $5 (or 50 Box Tops) for your school by purchasing 5 products (in the same purchase) and submitting your receipt through the Box Tops for Education® Bonus App. (On a recent trip to Walmart, I picked up Honey Nut Cheerios™, Annie’s™ Cheddar Bunnies, Mott’s Medleys® Fruit Snacks, Nature Valley™ Oats N Honey Granola Bars, and an Old El Paso™ Taco Dinner Kit – all products we use for my kids lunches (and dinner, because hello taco Tuesday!) The $5 is in addition to the Box Tops you’ll find on the packaging – it’s a double win!
To earn the extra $5, you simply have to find the offer and make your purchase, scan the receipt and watch the earnings add up! I simply scanned my receipt and within 24 hours, I had an email notification that the receipt had been verified and my school received credit.
But how do you keep up with all of the Box Tops? Honestly, when you cut them off of the packages, some of them are so small! I decorated one of our boxes (the Nature’s Valley™ box) to corral all of the points, ready to send in when the next letter requesting Box Tops comes home with my son.
I simply cut a sheet of 12×12 scrapbook paper in half, wrapped it around the box and taped it into place. I decorate the top and bottom with washi tape, and I had chipboard letters that I thought would be fun for this box. Now the Box Tops can go into a box instead of the bottom of a drawer only to possibly be lost!
While we’re dealing with boxes and the Box Tops, I actually made a magazine holder using the box from the family size Honey Nut Cheerios I purchased. It’s a great size! Does your child receive magazines? At one point, my son had three magazine subscriptions. That’s a lot for a then 4-year-old. At age 6, he has two magazines that come every month, and they get lost in the shuffle.
- For this project, I used a ruler to draw the diagonal line I was going to cut out. I did this on both sides of the box and then cut the box so there was an easy way to place magazines in for storage.
- Then I took a sheet of 12×12 scrapbook paper, measured and cut it to fit one side and the back long side. The 12×12 didn’t completely fit the entire box, so I knew I’d use washi tape to decorate the bottom. (I measured a second sheet of scrapbook paper and cut it to fit the other side and front of the box.
- I glued the paper in place, and secured it with washi tape!

I’m having a lot of fun with this app now. It’s been interesting this year trying to figure out how we can help out and give back to our son’s school, and Box Tops are one of the easiest ways for us to do just that. We have all of the products, and last fall it was a family affair collecting the points. Now I have a dedicated space to hold the Box Tops for collection.

What fun projects! I’m always looking for things I can do with the grandchildren. I’ve not thought to collect box tops for their school. I’m going to find that app.

This is such a cute idea! Who would have thought to create the magazine rack out of a cereal box and the box to hold box tops is genius!

As a new homeschooling mom, I really need something like this for all the smaller books and workbooks we have. I think I can even manage this simple DIY.

These are great ideas! I truly love this and now you have me wanting to collect box tops again to help support our local schools. Since my children are in high school, we really do not participate in these types of activities anymore. However, your blog post has convinced me to start it up again! Loving this!

Awesome idea. It is always nice to upcycle stuff that we usually would throw out. The magazine rack out of cereal boxes would be really useful. I would also use smaller boxes to hold the mail. Thank you for the idea.

I’ve got those little box tops all over. My kids are really good about checking packaging for them, but having them together in one spot is a great idea.
