Fall planting for spring enjoyment
I don’t think it’s fair that in order to have pretty spring flowers, most bulbs have to be planted this month.
I spent two hours in the yard today, mostly planting flower bulbs. Tulips are my main focus (I planted 40 bulbs) and hyacinths are the next focus (14 bulbs were planted.) I also threw in a few mums so I would feel good about my efforts. What can I say? I like instant gratification.
About 45 minutes were also spent re-potting house plants. It came to our attention that I planted one plant in the wrong soil, which led to a gnat problem in our house. We’re now rid of the gnats, and house plants have been living on our back porch for over a week. I bought new soil, re-potted everything and brought them back indoors…and not a day too soon. It’s supposed drop down to 41 degrees overnight. The high tomorrow is 58 – a week ago it was in the 80s.
Fall is really here. Now we wait for the leaves to change color (one of my trees is already half red), and then fall so we can rake and kill our backs for weekends on end. (This year, I’m paying a neighborhood kid to help rake. I can’t repeat last year’s raking/bagging/torture session.)
I love fall, but I’m also anxious to get back to spring and my new flowers.
