We took our first family hike when our son was around 3 years old. And while we live in North Carolina, that hike was actually in Pennsylvania. Around 3 years ago, we found out about the Kids in Parks program and now seek out hikes that are easy for us to do as a family. This program allows kids to learn about their surroundings, and to earn cool prizes. Our daughter did her first hike – walking and not being carried! – when she was almost 2.
When we travel, we will look at the site to see what is within driving distance for us, or along the route. And when we visited DC a few years ago, it was fun to see what was easy for the kids to do! If you live in the northern Virginia area, these are easy to access.
The great part of this program and D.C. is that the National Mall and Memorial Parks are considered hikes. Others to check out include:
- Rock Creek Park
- President’s Park
- National Capital Parks
- George Washington Memorial Parkway
The same trip we went to D.C., we also visited New York and on our drive home we did a side trip in Virginia to stretch and get some of our energy out. Sky Meadows State Park is a great spot (less than an hour from Sterling, VA) and there’s a fun spot further south if you’re able to visit – the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway.
As the weather is cooling off (hooray for end of summer/beginning of fall!) I love planning a great weekend trip. I don’t mind driving an hour or two, but I also enjoy getting the family out and exploring. These are great options if you’re visiting our nation’s capital! And if you live in the area, what a fun city to explore and be part of!
