Five towns to travel to from Charlottesville, VA

We travel through Virginia a few times a year, and Charlottesville is often mid-way when we are driving to upstate New York. Here’s a look at five nearby towns to check out that are still close to Charlottesville.

This is a sponsored post – and opinions are my own.

When we drive to New York, we like to plan a couple of stops along the way. Charlottesville is almost a halfway point for us, and there are so many towns that we’ve seen on our journeys. If you’re making that drive up I-81, here are a few places you should plan into your trip.

Roanoke, VA – This city is about two hours away, but it’s still a fun place to visit. (I may be biased since I now have family there.) They have great parks, and a cute downtown area. If you’re driving around, you may notice the Roanoke Star. It is the world’s largest freestanding illuminated man-made star and is at the top of Mill Mountain. My goal is to see it in a few weeks at night. I’ve so far only seen it during the day.

Luray, VA – Home of Luray Caverns. My dad took me through the caverns as a kid (one of those side trips!) and I still remember our trip. The caverns are fairly cool in the mid-50s for temperature, and tours aren’t often called off.

Harrisonburg, VA – Also an hour away from Charlottesville, they are home to a planetarium! James Madison University is home of the John C. Wells Planetarium which is a hybrid facility and offers free shows to the public on Saturdays from August through June! (Check their site for days they may be closed because of school breaks.)

Staunton, VA – Located about 45 minutes from Charlottesville, Staunton is home of the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum. I think presidential libraries and museums are interesting, and this would be interesting to visit at least once. Staunton is also home of the Camera Heritage Museum. Any photographers out there? This would be really cool to check out!

Mercedes-Benz of Charlottesville serves drivers in the Staunton, Fredericksburg, and Harrisonburg areas. They offer competitive prices on their luxury cars and an easy financing process. They offer express services any time (they’re open Monday-Saturday) or you can schedule service appointments with them at your convenience.
