Getting sick during training

Same story, different training schedule.

On Saturday my cough returned with a vengeance. I’ve noticed it for the better part of this past week, but it really hit me Saturday. By Saturday afternoon I was achy and was running a fever. It was not good.

I’m early enough into my training schedule that I can afford to take time off. I need to be ok with that. Nobody wants to be sick for months, right? So I’m trying to listen to my body.

Tuesday – Elliptical.

Wednesday – Strength training. This really worked my upper body/back and hamstrings. I wasn’t nearly as sore as the week before, but I could tell different parts were being worked. I ran for my warm-up and cool-down.

Thursday – Rest day!

Friday – 3.65 miles on the elliptical.

Saturday – 2.5 miles running

Sunday – After napping a few hours, I knew it was my turn to help get the boy out of the house, so we took a walk. It was a beautiful day at 67 degrees, and the walk did a lot for my overall attitude. (And it didn’t kill my lungs. I only coughed a few times.)

Monday – Strength training for almost an hour.

Two hours after I completed my Monday workout, I tested positive for the flu. Who knew?

My advice: Listen to your body. I’m glad I didn’t push through on Saturday and try for something more in distance. And I obviously needed the rest on Sunday. I guess I need the rest this week. (Though, I’m in disbelief I have the flu. It just threw off my whole week of work plans in Florida.)
