Read Across America week is coming up, which coincidentally happens around the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This Grinch handprint character puppet is a fun craft you could do with your child any time of the year, but it feels pretty perfect in early March.

Our kids are big readers. From day 1, they were being read to. (Seriously, my husband brought books to the hospital so we never missed a day reading.) It’s been fun over the years discovering their favorite types of books and authors – and seeing their interests change as they get older. Dr. Seuss books were always fun for them.

I’ve never hidden the fact that I love handprint crafts. My youngest is almost 9 and I still love getting crafts that have her handprints. This is really an easy activity, and if you wanted to make the arms and legs moveable, you could use mini brads to connect the arms and legs to the body.

First, sign up to download the templates for the body, arms, legs, and eyes. Then, continue on with the quick and easy craft!

List of Supplies:

  • Colored craft or scrapbook paper
  • Pencil – to trace the template and the handprint
  • Craft glue
  • Sharpie or gel pen
  • A pair of scissors

How to make your Grinch Handprint character

Step 1: Select 2 or 3 different shades of green colored paper. Trace the templates (from the email download) on the
selected papers and use the eye pattern directly from the template if you’re printing on white paper. Use a sharpie to fill in the eyes on the eye cutouts. Trace a hand (more than likely, your child’s hand) on a piece of green paper and cut it out.

Step 2: Attach the leg cutouts on the bottom side of the body cutout.

Step 3: Attach the arm cutouts on both sides of the body.

Step 4: Take the hand cutout and attach the eyebrow cutouts near the top part of the palm area.

Step 5: Attach the eye cutouts and the nose cutout on the palm as well.

Step 6: Use a sharpie to trace the mouth and attach the chest fur on the top part of the body part.

Step 7: Attach the head (handprint) on the top side of the body base to complete your handprinted Grinch. (You can glue a craft stick to the back to make it more of a puppet!)
