Last week I was SO excited about the winter weather headed our way. In fact, I thought it was clever that one of our headlines in the newspaper was “Here’s snow 2.0”. I made the most of our winter weekend. We had neighbors (who I think it’s safe to call friends now) over, and we visited friend’s houses in the neighborhood. I got to play with the dogs and run around in our yard. I also got to break in the snow shovel. And by Sunday, I dug my car out and was on my way for more fun (chick flick movie with my chick flick movie club girls.) On the downside, I missed a J.Crew sale I had been looking forward to. (And I can go to next month’s.) But, really, if that was the worst thing that happened, the weekend was not a total bust.

Oh, wait. Schools were out on Monday and had to close again on Tuesday, thus taking away a day of spring break. That did cut into my vacation plans for spring break (my boss and I split the break and I was to take the half that just got cut.) So I guess that’s a downside. Every day that schools miss will be one more day cut from the break – and then the dreaded Saturday school. Our schools can’t extend the year due to some law or something crazy that someone in Raleigh came up with.

Here we are at Wednesday, again, and we have winter weather in our forecast. Again.

And I don’t know if I should love it or hate it?

Right now I’m secretly loving it. (Notsosecret if it’s on my blog, though.)

By Monday, I might hate it.

  1. Thanks for your comment on my blog! It was interesting hearing everybody’s thoughts on that question!
Either way, it doesn’t matter, since I found out today that I have been accepted. 🙂

  2. Hi Jaime, I think we feel the same about this weather! our kids here in the Raleigh area actually missed 3 days of school this week, and we’re now missing a workday, a day in June and a day of spring break! Seriously, 5 snow days with three kids is a bit much!! I ran out of tequila by day 2. I think you had the right idea by hitting the ABC store! 🙂

Furloughs were announced today for the first quarter. (For those of you new to the furlough, it’s unpaid leave. Unemployment, if you will.)

The upside? I get a week off. The downside? I don’t get paid for it. Another upside? Since I took a full week furlough in June, I do get some unemployment benefits this time around. Another downside? I’ve spent too much money recently on things that weren’t necessities. (Christmas gifts, not a problem. We had a list and have been sticking to a budget. I’ve also been making a lot of things.)

My mom is in an industry where they are requiring her to work overtime. She’ll work more than 7 days straight (possibly 13 days straight) before she sees a day off. That’s the difference between cell phone companies (where she works) and newspapers (where I work.)

I thought my company was doing really well.

Let the tight(er) budgeting begin.

  1. Your company is doing well. Just last week, the publisher called employees to a meeting and announced a 20 percent profit margin.

This latest round of furloughs — which does not affect the corporate higher-ups — is just another way of rewarding stockholders and upper management on the backs of the employees.

Don’t expect a raise anytime soon, either.

  2. That sucks, but at least you can collect unemployment, I realize that is not much, but it is something. My fiance has been laid off for close to a year so the tight budget has been in full swing in our household.

  3. Patience, that stinks about your fiance. I hope he can find something very, very soon!

The perk this time is that I do get unemployment, and that’s something. I didn’t qualify the first week because I took my days at random times, and not as one full week at a time. The second furlough, I took it as a full week, so I now qualify for unemployment.

And, at least I still have a job. There’s that, too.

  4. sorry to hear about the news…that stinks.

i like the idea of being thankful you still have a job, i remind myself of that so often when i get frustrated with work…lots of people aren’t as lucky!
