How to make a diaper cake
I’ve been creating diaper cakes for more than 10 years – and now I’m here to show you how to make a diaper cake for under $25! It’s a practical baby shower gift without breaking your bank. And everything can be found at your area Ingles grocery store.
The following is a sponsored post. As always, all opinions are my own.
I’ve been doing the mom thing for more than 9 years, and I felt like I was somewhat late to the game. Several friends had babies before I had my oldest, and my go-to baby shower gift has always been a diaper cake. I have even shared pictures of diaper cakes I’ve made back when my site was a mere baby! And now it’s finally time to share my very simple tips on how to make a diaper cake – and stay within a reasonable budget.
First things first. You need diapers. If you want to go with a simple two-tier cake, you can grab a pack of the Pampers baby-dry diapers. I went with a size 2. Most new moms are going to get a LOT of newborn size diapers (and those aren’t going to last very long if you have a big baby.) Size 1 is a great size to go with, but size 2 also comes in handy once the baby crosses the 12-pound threshold. (Want a three-tier diaper cake? Grab two packs of diapers.)
You’ll also need a few items to accessorize your cake. Think pacifiers, bath toys, teething rings. I found all of these items at my local Ingles grocery store. Now through November 3, 2020, when you buy $40 in Pampers Diapers, you can save $10 on your next shopping trip at Ingles. You’re already buying groceries, so it’s great you can pick up baby essentials too!
All of the supplies you will need:
- Diapers
- accessories
- rubber bands
- ribbon
Each diaper should be rolled and secured with a rubber band. It took me less than 10 minute to do 37 diapers (and put everything together.) So go ahead and roll all of the diapers. Then grab a large rubber band, and put it around multiple diapers. Keep adding diapers into the larger rubber band until you have a decent base and it’s fairly tight. You’ll use about 2/3 of the diapers for the bottom layer. And go through the same step for the top layer.
Grab your ribbon and wrap it around one of the layers, tying a bow on the back. You’ll want to trim it, so it looks clean. Do this for the second layer. Tying the ribbon around will hide the rubber bands and hold the diapers together better, as well.
Add the accessories. You can tie them with smaller ribbon, or stick them in between the individual diapers. I like to add a stuffed animal or bath toy to the top as kind of the cake topper.
Both times I’ve had babies, the hospital provided us with diapers (so many diapers!) and they were Pampers. I loved that they didn’t leak with my babies, and they had the wetness indicator so I knew fairly quickly when they needed to be changed. They are soft and the Pampers Swaddlers have the umbilical cord notch (a cutout) on the front, so you don’t need to fold the top of the diaper over. A mom to a new baby will need that feature for a week or two, as well!
