impending house updates

It’s no secret that we have been making improvements to our house since the day we moved in. We literally started two days after, when we had the new roof put on. To be totally honest with you, our roof repair company did such a good job that it inspired us to look at other areas of our home that needed work! Nonetheless, two years later, we have a long wish list.

Today we went to Lowes just to get an idea of how much it would cost to replace our countertops. I have no desire to DIY that project. I’m going to leave it to the pros.

Did you know that granite doesn’t cost that much compared to laminate (when you’re looking at the general square foot price – when you add it up, it can get pricey.) And it’s cheaper than some of our other options, such as a recycled glass material.

$1131 is what we’re anticipating spending if we replace all 138 inches of counter space in the kitchen. That’s more than what I was figuring….but do-able. And it doesn’t include them taking out our existing countertops. (Really. It’s about $10 per square foot – so estimate almost another $300.)

So then we switched gears. We’re going to save money and get the countertops (hopefully sooner, rather than later.) We started thinking about furniture.

You see, we really want to replace the couch and chair in our living room with something smaller. The current pieces are oversized and would work great downstairs in the land of blue carpet and mirrored walls.

But we’re not sure where we are going to get said furniture. We saw one set tonight (at Sams Club of all places) for a cool $1100. I might as well get my new counters. I’m hoping we can swing by a furniture store tomorrow – their site looks promising, but we’ve never looked seriously in furniture stores.

The goal is to have a new couch before our Oscars party next month. Let the furniture countdown begin!

  1. we got all of our furniture from my in-law’s basement and from yard sales. if you can wait until spring it might be worth looking around. we got a leather (maybe pleather) recliner couch for under $200.

also, you might check big lots. they’re prices are reasonable and from what i understand (cousin and friend) they hold up longer than you would expect for the price
