I’m bringing back Financial Friday posts, but doing it every two weeks (or so.) Middle of the month and end of the month. I made it through December with Christmas and bills and still managed to have some money to put back into savings. Score. But now we’re facing a new expense.
I can’t magically cut $270 (my share of the daycare bill, since I’m also paying for the kiddo’s insurance) out of my normal bills, so it’s time to evaluate my frivolous spending.
Side note: This series of posts is making me look at my checking account a lot more. Thankfully I did, or I wouldn’t have seen the $24 charge for a magazine renewal – a magazine that I received two years of for Christmas. I called the magazine and got them to credit that back to me (so now my expiration date is 2014, rather than 2015.) Lesson learned. Check my account more often!
$165 Budgeted ~ $129.70 actual
I slashed this budget, and moved my cell phone over to Personal spending.
$310 budgeted ~ $159.89 actual
I took cash out for groceries. I also spent $20 on a deals site for a cake. That could have fallen under social, but I decided to keep it under food for now. I’ll be cashing in on the cake probably closer to Mother’s Day. (It’s from the place that made our wedding cake and ohmygosh it’s SO GOOD.) Oh, and I bought lunch for me, my mom and brother. Normally, I’d put that under social, but I had the money for food, so it’s coming from there this time.
$234 budgeted ~ $126.18 actual
I had a credit for my cell phone bill, which brought my total to $30.34 this month. I won’t be so lucky next month. This is always the hardest category for me. I’m trying to be better about it.
$154 budgeted ~ $67.68 actual
Family was in town, and I’ve done some fun things, which I’ll count as socializing. Also? That number seems like a lot for socializing. I’ll take a look, and maybe move money around in the different categories if I need to.
$117 budgeted ~ $16 actual
I had to buy some storage bags for clothes. Organization = home expense.
$117 budgeted ~ $59.40 actual
Other than my running shoes, my goal is to only purchase clothes with gift cards I received for Christmas. That will more than make up for this month. (Also? I managed to get my running shoes for super cheap. I found a pair I liked in a store, and found them online. Used a promo code, received free 2-day shipping and I had them less than a week later!)
$255 budgeted ~ $92.80 actual
Again, I’m lucky that I don’t drive far to work, so gas isn’t a huge expense for me (I don’t always have to get it weekly.) This week I had to get an oil change, and an air filter, so that cut into this by about $60. Hopefully that’s all I need this month, in terms of maintenance. And then the rest can go into savings for the new(er) car that I hope to purchase in the next year. I actually cut part of this part of my budget and moved money over to day care.
