kitchen update

I’m still going strong in our kitchen! I now have a sliver of wallpaper remaining to tear down (I’ll do that after I updated this.) Most of the glue came right off with the paper.

The husband went to do some errands and I decided to tackle the wallpaper above the refrigerator. This turned out to be a bigger task than I originally thought (did you expect anything less?) First, the fridge can fit three of me inside it, and is HUGE. I also figured out that there isn’t new flooring that’s properly installed underneath the fridge. (It’s laying in pieces beneath the fridge.) Anyway, I pulled it out, started tearing and after I pulled the disgusting wallpaper down, I cleaned the walls with bleach – just in case there was any mold. The ceiling above this area had a rafter that was replaced in December. The rafter had rotted away and it was caught by our super duper roofer. So. Lots of potential issues for this one little corner of our house.

The husband arrived home in the middle of all of my activities, only to realize I had knocked something loose on the back of the fridge and it was leaking water. (Our fridge has a water filter and ice maker. I don’t recommend those on anyone’s refrigerator, if you’re in the market for a new one. It’s just a hassle.) Thirty minutes later – and no help from the people at Sears – I tightened the bolt and I think it’s no longer leaking. (I think this because it wasn’t leaking when I pushed it back to the wall, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t knock it loose again. After reading Water Filter Way’s Guide, I’ve been thinking about getting a water softener installed in our house. I’ll have to talk to the husband about it first though!

We now have bare walls. I’ll work on the paste tomorrow evening and then will fill holes, and start priming. I’m going to be happy if the walls are just white for next Saturday. I’m pretty set with a light blue color in the kitchen. I think it’ll look nice with everything else.

I also have to recaulk everything.

The joys of owning a house…especially a house that the previous owners never updated. At least I’ll know that everything is done, and done right, this time around.

Expect more kitchen updates this week. Who know I could update so much on a room that is almost smaller than one of our bathrooms?

  1. We have an ice/water maker thing on our fridge and we love it! We use it all the time. However, we had it installed by the lowes people. Maybe they did it themselves…

  2. I definitely don’t think they installed it themselves. Too much went into installing the water line since our refrigerator is so far away from the water source (at the sink.)

This afternoon – about two hours after this post – I realized the line had come loose again….when I was in the basement and found a puddle from the kitchen. I felt like crying.

  3. The couple that built our house were in their 60’s when they built it & in their 90’s when we bought it. They had never updated anything. Randy & I found that to actually be a plus-it’s alot easier to take down one layer of wallpaper, paint over one coat of paint, etc. Also, it makes problems easier to spot. Keep taking the before & after pics–you’ll be glad you did. We are just now getting ready to renovate our kitchen so your posting is very interesting!
