Layered mermaid slushies are pretty, easy to make and great for an at home treat this spring and summer.
This slushie is surprisingly simple to make – and so pretty! Perfect for the mermaid-loving person in your house. Of course I love a good, pretty drink for a party (which makes this one even more appealing.) Also my birthday isn’t that far away, and I think I could go for mermaid slushies.
While I’m quite aware my daughter hasn’t gotten into the mermaid phase, I sense it’s coming. And I can’t wait to break out this recipe with my kids one day.
Not a fan of mermaids? These can be unicorn slushies as well. I’m not one to judge. This slushie uses Gatorade for the sweetness and coloring.
What you need for the mermaid slushie:
- Green Gatorade
- 2 tablespoons of Sugar
- Green Food Coloring
- Blue Gatorade
- Blue Food Coloring
- Purple G2 Gatorade
- Red Food Coloring
- Ice
These Gatorade flavor packets have the red, purple, orange and blue (and a clear one), if you can’t find the Gatorade colors in your stores. They don’t have a green Gatorade packet that I can find.
What equipment do you need for homemade slushies?
I LOVE using my Vitamix for anything smoothie, shake or slushie related. I even use my Vitamix to make different sauces. However, my favorite blender is by Oster. (And this one is more cost-effective than the Vitamix.)
This Oster Pro blender and food processor is also a fantastic deal if you want to save space with your kitchen appliances. I owned this set as well, until very recently.
Directions for making your layered mermaid slushies:
- Start by filling your blender about half way with green gatorade, sugar and 2 drops of green food coloring.
- Fill another 1/4 of the way with ice.
- Blend on high for about 1 minute.
- Pour into glass, filling 1/3 of the way, and place in freezer for about 10 minutes.
- While in the freezer, rinse blender and fill half way with blue gatorade, 1/4 of the way with ice, and 2 drops of blue food coloring.
- Blend on high for about 1 minute.
- Pour into glass, filling another 1/3 of the way, and place back in freezer for 10 minutes. Do not freeze solid.
- Rinse blender again, repeat process with purple G2 gatorade, ice, and 1 drop of red food coloring, 1 drop of blue food coloring.
- Blend on high for one minute and fill glass the remainder of the way.
- Serve and enjoy!
You could make so many variations of this in different colors, and I think it would be so fun for the next few weeks as we try not to focus on the end of summer.
