The little comforts in my life

I find so many things comforting in my life – slipper socks, yoga pants, music and baked goods. The holidays, however, bring on a different level of comfort.
I think I’ve been preparing for this holiday season all year long. Maybe even for the past two or three years. This is a big one for us. You see, we not only have a little one to start our own holiday traditions with, but my brother will may also be home for Christmas, after spending more than a year deployed. At least, he’ll be home sometime during the holidays.
That alone is a comforting thought. That my family will all be together.
I find comfort in so many things this time of year – the people I am surrounded by, the decorations in my house, the smells of all of the amazing food in our home (and family members homes) and even the scents from the candles I love to burn during this time of year. Isn’t it bizarre how I find comfort in wax? I just love that I can make my house more inviting and relaxed with a candle – any time of the year.
And I’m so excited to share these things with our son and hopefully create enjoyable memories for him.
I’m a creature of habit (aren’t we all?) and I find comfort in various traditions. One such tradition for my family takes place on Christmas Eve. My family will gather at my grandmother’s house for lasagna, after attending the Christmas Eve service at church. That day happens to be my grandparents’ anniversary, and my grandma always makes lasagna for dinner. It’ll be different this year now that my grandpa is gone, but comforting all the same, knowing that the rest of our family will be together. Apparently food is very important to me. I think a lot of people find comfort through food, and I’m no different. Cookies and pies are my weakness. Thankfully, I’m good at baking.
This holiday season means so much to me, and I can’t believe it’s here. I know Lucas won’t be able to take part in much this year, but I can’t wait to start new traditions with him. I envision him helping me bake cookies in years to come. I also hope he’ll enjoy some of the same holiday music and movies that his dad and I like. And some of the other things we enjoy – like gingerbread houses (making them and seeing the ones on display during the gingerbread competition.) Maybe he’ll even enjoy making ornaments with me. I’m so ready for the season.
What do you find comforting about this season?
