A mile a day – May challenge #mileadayMay

I had this idea a week or two ago ago. I wanted to challenge myself with some sort of activity every day and not feel down on myself if it was “just” walking or “just” running a mile or two.

mileadayMay

Enter my mile a day challenge. For the month of May, I challenged myself to complete a mile a day of some activity. Walking, running, swimming, biking. It all counts. Those are all calories burned! So the mile counts.

Starting is generally the biggest problem I have. It’s so easy to take a day off. It’s hard for me to start a habit (and it takes, I think, 21 days to create a habit?)

I have a half marathon coming up in a couple of weeks. And I do post on Tuesdays with my training updates. I tend to take a day (or two or three) off because I can be a bit lazy or busy. I don’t want to have any excuses, though. I can take 20 minutes out of my day to walk a mile if I’m not able to get a full 30 or 60-minute workout in.

Oh, and I’m planning on carrying this out in June. If you want to see me get lazy, just check in with me the day after a race. I eat ALL THE STUFF in the house, and basically take over the couch. Not this time. I want to remain active. And I know that rest days are important. I just don’t think half of my week needs to be devoted to rest when I’ve only done the elliptical for 30-minutes per day. I also don’t think a walk (of a mile) is going to interfere with my training.

So my miles for the beginning of May:

May 1 – A mile of walking on the Wii. (I almost backed out of doing day ONE!)
May 2 – Ran 3.3 miles.
May 3 – Walked a mile in our neighborhood at 9:00 at night. Whatever it took to get a mile in.
May 4 – Ran 8 miles. That’s a lot of miles and no, my miles do not carry over to the rest of the week (because my husband just asked me that question.)

Care to join me? I’m using the hashtag #mileadayMay on Twitter and Instagram. I’m going to call my blog updates Mile-a-Day-Monday since I’ll be posting them on Mondays. And I’m inviting you to join me. It’ll be fun!

  1. I hope you persevere and stick to it!! I’m also terrible at getting habits in place. I tend to jump on the bandwagon of whatever the trend is for a couple weeks and then promptly fall right back off.

  2. This is such a good idea. I bet that all of those miles will add up. I would love to do this with my family and get my daughter involved.

  3. When I track it like that it makes me feel guilty when I skip, so I stick with it. A mile of activity is reasonable per day, and you’ve been outdoing that!

  4. I have seen this challenge on a blog called enJOY it. It’s great challenge! I actually run with my dog every day (M-F) before work. It’s fun! Keep it up!

  5. I just bought a treadmill. I’m not expecting to lose a ton of weight right now (although I need to drop about 60-70 pounds). Right now, I’m just wanting to increase my endurance level. I’ve also made some healthier swaps in some recipes so I’m going the slow and steady wins the race approach. Always before, if I went full on and full steam ahead, I fell off the wagon each and every time. I can’t believe you ran 8 miles in ONE day though. SHEESH!!! That’s awesome!

  6. I’m loving your motivation. It’s contagious. And good for you for proactivley planning not to veg out and eat everything in the house (after the race) this time. 🙂 your body will thank you (your heart might be mad for a minute or two, but it’ll adjust 😉 ).

  7. LOVE this idea. I get in at least 5 miles at the gym, but I only go 3 days a week. I need to make sure to get a mile or 2 in each day… I might have to join you on this challenge!

  8. I’m not a runner, but I’d walk a mile a day….Now that the weather is nicer, I’m taking the pooch out for walks after the kids go to bed in our neighborhood.

  9. This is great! A mile is a totally doable goal. You may have to work up to two miles by the end of your challenge! Keep it up!

  10. What a great idea! I may join in June. I’m doing pretty well in May with my interval classes three days a week and running two-three days a week, I love the idea of not getting down on ourselves when we run “just” one mile.
