my Valentine

Happy Valentine’s Day! I have mixed feelings about this day. My husband has always been a great Valentine, but he’s pretty good every other day of the year too.

I used to be the RA and RD in college who threw the anti-Valentine’s Day parties (and always had a great turnout!) I got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2000 – and that didn’t get me anywhere, since I called it all off three years later.

Five years ago, my husband and I celebrated our first Valentine’s Day as a dating couple. He bought a journal and wrote poems and stories about us and lists of what he loved about me – and it was possibly the sweetest thing he’s ever done for me (besides, you know, marrying me.) Once, he found all these recipes for chicken and compiled a cookbook for me. You see, I don’t eat a lot of red meat, and back then I was all about higher fiber, lower fat, and anything chicken.

This year was no exception in the gift department – except it wasn’t handmade. I now have my very own pink iPod – and 16 GB to fill up with music and videos. That’s a huge step up from my 1 GB Shuffle. (I’ll still use the Shuffle for running because I LOVE it.) But, 16 GB? I don’t know what to do with the space! Oh wait, I will be downloading a season of “The Office” before I go to Hawaii, and I can watch it on the plane and in the airport.

This morning we went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast (he LOVES Cracker Barrel) and tonight we have reservations at Zambra. (We also have a gift certificate…we’re kind of cheap frugal.)

Oh, and I bought him the Wii drums, which showed up in their humongous box last Saturday. He tripped over the box, which wasn’t sealed very well, and we opened them Saturday night. He’s in love. I also bought him the orange cover for his new phone. (The orange matches his orange cover.) Oh, and handmade his card, of course.

I love that I have a Valentine every day of the year, and not just on this one day.
