I saw Edwin McCain last night. He was playing in one of the auditoriums at the Porter Center on the campus of Brevard College. It was seated, and very intimate (watch the video for “I’ll Be” and about one minute before the end, he walks to the edge of the stage and sings without his microphone – that was about 3 feet away from me.) I couldn’t get great photos, but my cell phone shot great video….as you can see from below.
It was such a great show. Edwin was in his element. It was very hometown and laid back.
His son’s birthday was yesterday and several people in the audience had birthdays or children’s birthdays. I caught the tailend of him singing happy birthday to everyone 🙂 He had mentioned that he wanted to play this weekend close to home because of his son’s birthday, I just didn’t realize he was playing in Brevard on the actual day. (Check out www.citizen-times.com/podcasts to listen to the podcast with Edwin.)
This song was written about his grandmother’s home in Brevard. I love it. It reminds me of my own grandma’s home in Pennsylvania.
See Off This Mountain:
This song just shows how much fun Edwin and Craig Shields have together. It’s sooooo Craig. And Craig gets some great solos on the sax during the song.
One Thing Left To Do:
I missed the beginning of the song, and truthfully wasn’t going to record it, but figured I might as well. Most people know Edwin because of this song. I’m glad I did record it. Edwin went totally acoustic – no microphones – towards the end of the song. Love it.
Great story, and such a fun song!!
Let it Slide:
This followed “Let It Slide” when Larry still had the Ukelele. Edwin was playing around, and it resulted in this little Christmas tribute!
I almost cried when he sang this…..a very, very touching song.
Prayer to Saint Peter:
I have one more concert of 2008 to attend (on Monday), but I almost wish I had just closed out my “concert year” with Edwin’s show. It was a different kind of show for him, and I just loveee his acoustic shows. So natural and raw.
Enjoy the videos. I might have one more to update with 🙂
Update: Tomorrow’s weather is a little iffy, so Edwin’s show might be the last one I attend this year. With snow and rain turning into ice in the forecast, I don’t know if I can risk driving down the mountain to Spartanburg tomorrow night.
Think warm thoughts!
