SOC: Planes, shuttles and automobiles – we’re on the road in DC!

So we’re in the beginning of our summer trip! For this trip, we’re going to be visiting D.C. and then driving up to upstate N.Y. for a few days. It’s sure to be a whirlwind and I’m shocked that we’ve made it to DC in one piece.

My husband had a conference in DC and drove in a couple of days ago. We had talked about the kids and I coming with him, but I also wanted to see my family this summer. One idea led to another and we are combining the two trips. The kids and I flew into DC this morning.

I packed our stuff days ago. I mean, on Tuesday night I packed the car and just prayed for the best. I was only bringing the kids, a tote bag and my purse today. The tote bag had some snacks, toys for traveling, and a few items (like my glasses, stuff I need on a daily basis) and that was it. We also had my daughter’s stroller and car seat, since I decided not to wear her in the airport.

I couldn’t believe how nice people were to us – and helpful! My daughter got a little fussy on the plane, but as long as I kept her fed she was fine. The flight attendant at one point made a “balloon” with a rubber glove and handed it to her and whenever I needed a distraction, I gave it to the baby to toss around. She had a blast. Getting off the plane, people helped me and then gathering the seat and stroller, I had more help. Seriously. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer group to fly with.

Sadly, our shuttle experience did not go as well. After the shuttle bypassed us (imagine me trying to wave down a shuttle, with two kids and a stroller in tow), I angrily called the hotel back, and they sent the guy back. I have no idea why he drove by without getting us. It was so frustrating (he didn’t have anyone on the shuttle!) Also, you try telling me we were not near the hotel shuttles sign. I dare you.

We spent the better part of the afternoon in our hotel room. It was hot, the baby needed to nap (a proper nap!) and it was kind of nice not being on the go.

Don’t you just love how she crosses her ankles? I’m kind of obsessed with it, actually.

We drove to a place for dinner tonight – all types of food trucks. It was different than I had anticipated – much louder, a ton of tacos, and not much else. Very overpriced drinks. I was going to get a frozen drink, only to find out I would have to wait another 15 minutes for it to be frozen. It was 93 degrees out, the kids and I were exhausted and hungry and…yeah.

After we ate (tacos), we decided to drive around. We showed our son a few monuments and a brief glimpse of the White House (which is gated off WAY more than it was 2 years ago when I was here!) He doesn’t really care about it, though.

Tomorrow the kids and I will take on the zoo and at least one museum. My husband gets out of his conference early enough so I’m hoping we can see a monument or three. šŸ˜‰ Actually, there’s a track trail here, and I’m wondering if we can all do that before we meet a longtime friend for dinner.

Can you believe that was all just today? One day! Eesh! How was your Friday?
