The Best Oreo Hot Chocolate Bomb Recipe
Make the most of the hot chocolate experience with these hot chocolate bombs. Add in Oreos and you have some really delicious Oreo Hot Chocolate Bombs!
I have to admit – I totally fell down the hot chocolate bomb rabbit hole before the holidays. Someone I follow (who lives in Canada) had shared some a couple months ago and I really wanted to try to make my own. I purchased almost a dozen from someone local before Christmas. We had all types of flavors and they were really fun for me and the kids.
But hot chocolate bombs aren’t just for the holidays! It’s cold. Hot chocolate is great when it’s cold outside. Even better when it starts out as hot chocolate bombs and you can add some extra entertainment into the day or night. And we all need a break right now, right?
The following recipe makes between 8 and 10 hot chocolate bombs
What you need to make Oreo Hot Chocolate Bombs:
- 2 – 70mm Silicone Sphere Molds
- 1 – 30oz of Ghirardelli white Chocolate melting wafers
- 2 C of hot cocoa mix
- 1 C mini marshmallows (Or, get hot chocolate mix with the mini marshmallows already in the mix)
- 1 small ceramic plate heated up
- 1 disposable piping bag
- 2 C crushed Oreos
- 1 cookie sheet fitted with wax paper
Instructions for making Oreo Hot Chocolate Bombs:
Not required, but you can cut silicone molds so each sphere is a separate mold (as pictured.) Sometimes it is easier to control the mold when working with melted chocolate this way.
And now we making the outer shell of the hot chocolate bomb:
- Use a paper towel or clean kitchen towel and wipe the inside of the silicone molds. This will allow your chocolate mold to have a shiny coat on it
- Using a small bowl, place ½ C of the white chocolate and set aside for later
- Using a heat safe bowl, pour the chocolate into the bowl and place the melting wafers in the microwave for 45 second intervals. Make sure to stir the chocolate after each 45 seconds until completely melted and smooth. If you do this too long, the chocolate will get clumpy and you can’t stir it.
- Carefully fold in ¾ C crushed Oreos into the white chocolate
- Using a spoon, place between 1-2 Tablespoons of the chocolate into the mold
- Carefully swirl the chocolate to completely coat the inside of the mold
- Lightly shake the extra chocolate back into the bowl
- Place the coated molds into the fridge for around 5-10 minutes
- Remove from the fridge and gently peel the silicone mold back away from the hardened chocolate shell
- Carefully place the mold onto the cookie sheet
- Repeat steps with remaining molds
- Melt the chocolate that was set aside and spoon it into the piping bag and set aside
- You should now have 8 half sphere molds.
- Carefully take the open side of the sphere and place it onto the warm plate to melt off the uneven edges to create a smooth edging
- Place the shell back onto the cookie sheet and allow the edge to harden
Building the hot chocolate bomb:
- Scoop about 1 Tablespoon of the hot cocoa mix and some of the marshmallows into the bottom of the sphere mold
- Place the top of the shell back onto the warm warm plate to melt the edges for a few seconds
- Quickly place the melted edges onto the filled shell and gently press down
- Cut the tip off the piping bag and drizzle chocolate over the cocoa bombs
- Sprinkle some crushed Oreos onto the top of the cocoa bomb
- Allow to set before enjoying!
Do You Use Milk or Water for Your Hot Cocoa Bomb?
Whether you use milk or water for your hot chocolate bomb is going to come down to personal preference. (I prefer milk.) My kids are divided on this – one prefers hot cocoa with milk, while the other prefers hot chocolate with water. Milk will make it thicker and this was written with milk in mind.
How to Activate Your Hot Chocolate Bomb:
My first few hot chocolate bombs were kind of a fail when it came to breaking open. I recommend heating 1 1/4 cups of milk in a mug (or measuring cup) in the microwave for at least 1:30 to 2 minutes, depending on how your microwave heats. Place the hot chocolate bomb in your mug and slowly pour the warm milk over the bomb. If the milk hits the chocolate in the same spot, it will melt and split open (which is the fun part to watch!) Then stir well before enjoying.
Do Hot Chocolate Bombs Need to be Refrigerated?
They don’t need to be refrigerated! I would keep them in a sealed container (think of a clamshell container with a paper liner in the bottom, just to keep things from melting and getting messy.) As long as you keep them in a cool, dry place, you should be good when it comes time to use them! We’ve kept ours for more than a week in the past, but my kids love to make them in the winter so they don’t last long.
