Project 1: No sew fleece blanket #12projects12months
This was NOT what I set out to complete first this year, but I’m super pleased with how it came out. A week ago, I was going through a closet and came across my fabric stash. I forgot I had this Appalachian State fleece, and I bought it about three four years ago – with no clue as to what it would become. I did a quick internet search about fleece, and I decided to double it up and make a blanket. (I really thought I would have to sew it, and this project did not involve my sewing machine at all.)
I had 3 yards of fabric. That is SO MUCH. First, I trimmed off the edges and tossed them. (I’ve seen other crafters save those pieces – I am not one of those people.) I found the center point length-wise, and cut the fabric in half. I placed the two pieces together – wrong side to wrong side so the “right” sides were both on the outside. I also made sure that the logos were going the same way, because I’m a little crazy like that.
I laid the fleece down and used my rotary cutter to cut a 4×4-inch square out of each corner. And in each corner (just outside of the cut portions), I safety-pinned the two pieces together so they wouldn’t slide. Also, I’ve seen other people do something with their 4×4 squares. I tossed mine. No shame.
From there, I used my straight-edge and rotary cutter and cut 4-inch strips about one-inch wide down each side. I did this over the course of two days. When I would have a few minutes, I’d lay the thing down on the floor and cut.
On Tuesday night, while we watched a movie, I tied each of the sets of strips in a double knot. Again, I’ve seen that these can be fancy. I wanted to have a completed blanket in one night, and I did quick and dirty double knots.
The ginormous “throw” blanket is about 1.5 yards long. It doesn’t sound huge, but it’s pretty largeThe fleece was fairly wide, so it’s at least a yard wide.
The blanket is SO warm. And from what I’ve read, fleece won’t fray. I found this fabric on fabric.com forever ago and I know I used a discount code. I’m so glad I was able to make something I know my husband will use and it didn’t take too much out of me to complete it – why didn’t I complete this years ago??
See? Happy husband. Warm husband.
Do you drag your feet on projects? Any extra projects you’re currently stuck on or have sitting in a closet just waiting for the right year to come along so you can finish them?
Anything that is no sew is right up my alley! Thanks for sharing.
it turned out great!
happy Kenny=happy Jaime!
i love these! We made them a few years ago. I have a bunch of fabric squares in my closet… someday I’ll do something with them…
Love how easy this DIY is. The blanket looks really cozy too. Too bad it’s not a cowboys blanket though!!
my kids each have one of these. they are SUPER warm. i made ours enormous- they fit the kids’ twin beds!! but i know they’ll be snuggly warm. great job (i don’t save scraps either)
It came out great and your husband does look tickled yellow and black to have it. š I love to snuggle up with a nice warm blanket like that this time of year!
I love that this doesn’t involve any sewing, because lord knows I can’t sew to save my life LOL. Yours turned out so good – I love it.
Thank you for these directions! I have been wanting to make one for my girls but didn’t know how.
such a cozy creation. I think I can get my kids to make one for their big sister for when she leaves for college.
I love the blanket, especially the strips along the sides. My scrapbooking projects are sitting in the closet collecting dust. I need to get back to working on them!
I love these no sew fleeces! My mom made one for my daughter’s extra playard at her house. It was so warm and snuggly my daughter never let it go! I still have it to this day! great job! Love your husband modeling your handy work!
I’ve made a few of these myself! They are so easy to make and sooo warm!
I totally drag my feet on projects!! I still have a half finished afghan that I was crocheting for my sister’s college graduation. My sister is now 40 years old!
The blanket looks so nice and warm. What a great DIY project!
I totally drag my feet on projects, I love this challenge to force yourself to do a project each month! Great blanket!
Fleece blankets are my favorite things lately! The temps have been almost unbearable. My motto is you can never have too many blankets š So cool that you didn’t have to do any sewing!
That is such a fun and cozy project. It’s going to be used and snuggled with forever!
The blanket turned out cute! I made scarfs in a similar way once and they are cute for game day gear!
What a fun project, and it turned out so cool! I worked on one of these on a smaller scale for a local animal shelter last year!
I totally drag my feet. I made a rag quilt once… I had it about half done and then took about a 6 month break.
Anything that is no sew has my seal of approval especially since I don’t know how to sew. Looks great!
It turned out great! I have some fleece that I bought a year or so ago for my husband and I’ve ever done anything with it. I might do this for my hubs now, I might get it done in time for his birthday…in September š
This sounds like a great project. Unfortunately I am a project procrastinator. I start one, get half way through it and wait a month or two before finishing. Cute blanket.
My mom used to make these kinds of blankets when I was a kid
Fun blanket and just in time for football season. A funny thing is, I personally prefer to sew my ‘no sew’ blankets because I don’t like the ties. lol
One of my favorite blankets is a blanket like that. I would love to make one!
That turned out great and it’s so nice that you made it for your hubby.
