Summertime is fun time in our house. It’s the end of school, my husband’s birthday, birthdays of several fabulous friends, then back to school and our son’s birthday. We love celebrating. We’re traveling a lot over the next few weeks and couldn’t get a proper birthday party set up, so I decided to throw a Red, White & Funshine party to celebrate everything. This also happened to fall on National Ice Cream Day – who doesn’t love to celebrate ice cream? (Want to share a little funshine and throw your own party? I found all of my items at Walmart late last week. It was so easy to stop by and grab everything in one trip on my way home from the office. I ended up buying M&M’s® Plain, M&M’s® Peanut, M&M’s® Peanut Butter, Skittles®, Starburst® minis unwrapped, SNICKERS® Ice Cream Bars and M&M’s® Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches, Dr Pepper® Cherry and Pedigree Dentastix® Original for “doggie bags” (treats to go home with my dog-loving friends.)

Because most of my friends enjoy cupcakes, I thought I’d make a Cherry Chocolate cupcake.

These are the easiest cupcakes you’ll ever make. All they require is a can of soda (or 12 ounces of soda) and a chocolate cake mix. The Dr Pepper® Cherry was perfect for this cupcake. I mixed the soda and the cake mix together, scooped into the cupcake liners and baked according to the cake mix package. (Around 15 minutes.)

Cherry Chocolate Cupcakes

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 can (12 ounces) Dr Pepper® Cherry
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix

Instructions

Mix the Dr Pepper® Cherry and the cake mix together.

Divide into cupcake liners about 2/3 full

Bake according to cake mix instructions (around 15 minutes.)

I created a cupcake topper and liner to celebrate “everything.” You can download the cupcake topper here and the blue wrappers and red/yellow cupcake wrappers in the mentioned links.

To make the toppers, I purchased some lollipop sticks, cut the toppers (I used a 2-inch scrapbook punch, which was the perfect size) and taped the sticks to the back of the card stock circles with a piece of washi tape. Washi tape is so fun and I used it on so many things and it took very little time. Note that I added it to my jars and utensils. Everything received so many compliments!

I created a candy/toppings bar full of my favorite candies, fruit and other toppings. I added a bin for drinks and the Dr Pepper® Cherry was so fun for ice cream floats – and such a hit! (I realized later my friend Ryan posted a picture of his float and I’m excited he enjoyed it!)

It was fun seeing everyone’s ice cream and float creations.

The afternoon of the party brought us 90-degree temperatures, so we had water games in the back yard. I’m glad the adults were able to enjoy the water toys and sprinklers.

I knew I would have leftover candy and treats, so I made a bin for treat bags that everyone could fill for later. I also had doggie bags – treat bags with Pedigree Dentastix® Original – for the dog owners to take home to their pups.
