Safety Tips for Fall Road Trips

Fall is my favorite time of year for road trips or day trips. Pumpkin patches and changing leaves find me wanting to drive more, but with that I know driving habits need to change (at least a little!)

While summer road trips are more popular, I find myself wanting to drive more in the fall. I want to take in all of the fall colors, and I won’t always get that in my back yard. And while a lot of people may discuss safety of driving in the winter, I think fall is equally important.

Watch for leaves covering road ways. Wet leaves can be slick! I’ve had vehicles slide just as much on wet leaves as in icy conditions. You don’t want to brake on wet leaves.

Be on the lookout for more animals. Deer are going to be out all over, but also other wildlife will be out before they head in for hibernation. My dad used to have a deer whistle on his truck when we lived in the north. It helped warn deer that our vehicle was nearby. (And a deer whistle is not that expensive.)

Prepare for more driving in the dark. The time changes soon! With that, I know I’ll be driving home from work in the dark, and I’m not always the best at seeing at night while driving. (Also, since I know my vision isn’t the greatest for night driving, I always get my eyes checked this time of year.) While we’re on the subject of vision and driving, make sure you have your sunglasses for the bright sun in the morning and the moments before the sun sets in the evening. I’m more than grateful for my sunglasses compartment in my car these days!

Finally, is your car tuned up and ready to go? I like to schedule my tune-ups fairly regularly, and in between seasons so I’m ready for what is coming at me next.
