Spiced Holiday Sugar Cookies Recipe
A little different spin on the always delicious sugar cookies, these spiced holiday sugar cookies don’t require icing and are fairly quick to make!
Every year for several years, I’ve participated in the Houseful of Cookies roundup and it’s always a lot of fun. We’re a little late this year, but lucky for you, this recipe doesn’t take a lot of planning! I’ve shared the perfect sugar cookie in the past, and it included the best icing. These cookies don’t need icing and I love the different spices that cover the entire outside of the cookie.
What you need to make the spiced sugar cookies:
- 2 sticks of softened butter
- 1 1/2 cup of sugar
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla
- 2 eggs
- 2 ½ cup of flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- Pinch of salt
What you’ll need to roll the cookies in before baking:
- ¼ cup of sugar
- ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon of nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon of allspice
How to make these spiced holiday sugar cookies:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or the silicon baking sheets.
- In a mixing bowl cream together butter and sugar. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes or until fluffy.
- Add eggs and vanilla to the bowl and mix for an additional 2 minutes.
- Add the baking soda and salt to the bowl and mix until well incorporated.
- Add the flour and continue to mix. You could switch from your electric mixer to mixing by spoon at this point because the dough will get thick. (I still preferred my mixer.)
- Mix until the flour is completely incorporated and the dough is not too sticky. If it feels very sticky, you can add ¼ cup of flour at a time until you’re able to work with the dough.
- In a small bowl combine the sugar and spices for rolling.
- Use a cookie scoop or make balls of the dough about an inch in diameter and drop the dough, one ball at a time, into the sugar mixture and roll. The dough should be completely covered in sugar.
- Place 3 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 11 to 13 minutes or until the tops no longer look glossy.
Can you add flavoring to the sugar cookies?
You could add some orange zest, but I love the simplicity of sugar cookies, so I wouldn’t necessarily add anything else to flavor the cookies more. (The spices should be plenty!)
Are these cookies snickerdoodles?
Not quite! Snickerdoodles are sugar cookies rolled in cinnamon and sugar. The spiced holiday sugar cookies are rolled in sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice – so two additional spices.
