(sponsored) COOL WHIP: a simple treat
The official start to summer is upon us, which means desserts are becoming a regular occurrence in our household. I’m not sure what it is about summer, but we tend to do more desserts after dinner. (Maybe it’s all of the celebrating we tend to do? The fruit that’s available?) In order to keep things a little less boring, I like to dress things up with COOL WHIP Whipped Topping. Take, for instance, the dessert we had this weekend.
Strawberries. Simple enough, right? It’s no secret that I love strawberries, but the husband doesn’t eat them often – especially when they’re plain. Enter COOL WHIP. I offered the husband strawberries one evening, and he actually accepted and responded with “I’d like more COOL WHIP than actual strawberries.” Request granted.
Now, most people would add in shortcake to do a whole strawberry shortcake, but I tend to just eat strawberries and COOL WHIP. Oh, and I’ve also been known to eat COOL WHIP straight from the tub. I have no shame.
But sometimes I like to make desserts look pretty. Like the strawberries. Oh, and cakes. COOL WHIP goes well with cake.
In the past, my mom has made her own birthday cake, and a few years ago, I started taking over that task for her. She loves a good black forest cake, and I didn’t realize just how easy it was to make until that first time I made one. (Now to transport it, it’s a whole different ballgame. I try not to drive cakes more than a block away, if at all possible. Though if you travel with a cake, and it just happens to slide, COOL WHIP is a great filler and mistake hider. Not that I’ve tried that or anything – more than twice, that is.)
So this cake requires the following:
1 chocolate cake mix (and any ingredients you need with that)
1 container of COOL WHIP
1 can of cherry pie filling
Make the cake according to the instructions on the box. Once cake is cooled, use COOL WHIP as your “icing” to hold the cake together in between layers and for the top layer. So add COOL WHIP to the bottom layer, add some cherry pie filling to that layer and then place the other layer of the cake on top, cover with COOL WHIP and cherry pie filling.
And then dive in.
I personally think the cherry filling mixed with the COOL WHIP makes the cake look that much nicer. And it tastes great.
