Stampin’ Up Cupcakes & Carousels cake topper DIY

We celebrated my girl’s birthday this past weekend. Her party was a little different as I went for a color theme, rather than an object/character theme. (My son’s first birthday revolved around sock monkeys. My daughter’s birthday is all things purple and pink.)

Recently Stampin’ Up sent me a couple of stamp sets and I knew I wanted to incorporate the carousel into my baby girl’s birthday. It didn’t hit me until Friday, though, what I was really going to do with it. At what felt like the last minute, I decided it would be a fun cake topper!  I started pulling supplies from around the house, which was perfect for this month’s craft destash challenge.

Supplies needed:
Stamp sets – I used the Carousel Birthday set and the Balloon Adventures set
Card stock
Ink (I loved the Stampin’ Up markers – I used them throughout.)
Two paper clips
A lollipop stick (I randomly had a bag of these and I cut one in half)
Double sided tape

I stamped three carousels out on a piece of paper, and tested with one of the carousels to see what colors worked best. I then cut two of the carousels out and trimmed them pretty close to the edge of the image.

Stamp (and punch) balloons out. Straighten the two paper clips to adhere to the balloons. Tape a second balloon to the back of the first balloon. (I cut 4 balloons out and made them double-sided.

“Fasten” the balloons to the carousel with the double-sided tape. Cut the stick in half, and wrap the top of it with the double sided tape. Adhere the stick to the back of one of the carousels.

Using the double-sided tape, adhere the second carousel to the back of the first carousel. (This is really so the carousel is double-sided.

I did receive stamp sets from Stampin’ Up recently, but no other compensation was exchanged. Affiliate links may be used in my post. Of course, all opinions, time and effort put into this project are my own!

  1. How cute. I bet your daughter was thrilled with her Pink and Purple party. This idea is great for people like me who can’t decorate a cake because I could make something like this to pretty up a cake.

  2. That carousel is just amazing! And it worked perfectly as a cake topper šŸ™‚ Love the color theme, too. Great job working with what you had on hand to make something great!

  3. I love this project! I usually just do little buntings to put on top of my cakes when I’m feeling extra creative but this will totally surprise everyone I know and everyone they now LOL. Can’t wait to try it out.

  4. Super fun! Great job and very creative. Love it. We did a “color” theme for R’s 1st bday (pink and gold), and I liked that a lot better than actually doing a character or whatever. It was easier to find stuff to decorate and felt really “classic” to me once it was all put together.

  5. These cake toppers look amazing! I love using stamps for more than just traditional papercrafts, too. That carousel is so cute I see why you had to use it!

  6. Great job with this for your daughter, and a very happy birthday to her. Pink and purple were my favorite colors when I was growing up!

  7. I love the idea of sticking to a color or design theme for a birthday party. It really lets you be creative and the skys the limit! I have 3 girls so purple and pink would definitely be a huge hit! lol

  8. This is so cute your daughter will love it for sure šŸ™‚ I have never thought about decorating a cake with a stamp like this.

  9. Fun! I love that you can make this way ahead of the party and then not fret over decorating the cake when there is so much else to do just before a party.
