My husband commented on my laptop graveyard this past week. I have a couple of old laptops and I wasn’t even sure if they would start up again – and I didn’t have a clue as to how to get rid of the laptops without wiping them clean (and who would take them?) So on Sunday, I plugged one in and had to reset it’s date/time to even get the thing to turn on.
Once I got into it, I realized my photos dating back to 2004 were on the machine. I’ve been missing these pictures and I’ve been kicking myself for not storing them in different places!
(Photos from top left, clockwise: Our first photo as a couple back in 2004, me with George on my trip to California, my bff Cynthia and I in 2005 – and I need to find that necklace. I loved it!, my then-boyfriend – now husband – playing with my younger cousins.)
When I took my photography class a year ago, the instructor told us over and over that we should have our photos in multiple places. I normally have mine on my desktop computer, and I started burning them onto dvd a little over a year ago. Last Christmas, I bought an external hard drive, so my photos were in at least two or three different places.
The dvds are even being stored in a fireproof safe. I really don’t want to lose my photos.
I’ve even been backing up photos and videos from my phone. I’m not as diligent as I should be when I’m putting those on my computer and external hard drive, but they’re eventually making it.
I’ve heard of people even keeping a copy of their cds/dvds outside of their home. How far do you go to make sure your data is backed up and secure?
Now I just need to figure out a safe way to wipe the hard drives clean and dispose of the laptop graveyard.
