Creating a reading corner for a toddler #12projects12months #DIY
I’ve been wanting to create a reading corner for our son for a long, long time. He has hundreds of books (I am not exaggerating) and I thought it would be fun for him to have books displayed in a corner of his room, where he could kick back and read. I made a large pouf before he was born and he loves to lay on it, but there was nothing else in the corner, besides his enormous stuffed monkey.
Months ago, I bought the Ikea spice racks (Bekvam on their website) to repurpose as book displays. I hung a few so that some of his favorite books could display – almost as artwork. Best part is I can switch out the books based on his current favorite. (If you are not in an area with an Ikea, you can also purchase the spice racks on Amazon.)
It took all of 25 minutes to put the three Bekvam racks together and screw them into the wall. I think it took longer to decide on what books should go on display. Oh, and the racks are super affordable at $3.99 per spice rack. I bought a few to put in our guest room and display other books.
The photos make the racks look like they are higher than they really are. My son is able to reach even the top one with his largest books – and they give him space to grow.
And even better, when we were done, my son looked at me and said, “When I wake up, all of my books will be out!”
So true. So very true.
This is my eleventh completed project in my quest to complete 12 by the end of the year! See project 1 | project 2 | project 3 | project 4 | project 5 | project 6 | project 7 | project 8 | project 9 | project 10 in previous posts.
This is so cute! Every time I have gone to IKEA to look for these they are GONE. So irritating since this is such a great idea!
I had to have someone help me find them. They were missing from the showroom, but available on the next floor. (And if you check their site, you can tell how many are in stock at the location you go to. I knew this store had over 500!)
That is a great idea! I am ALL for encouraging reading while they are young!
As a huge book person, I love the idea of a reading corner! How cute!
Aw, this is great! And it looks like he’s thrilled with it, too!
This is so sweet! I love everything you did from the seating to the storage.
That came out great!
Oh this is so cool. Everyone needs a nook to read in.
Reading time was one of my favorite parts of the day with our toddlers. I love the little reading corner you made!
So cute and affordable. I need to hang a few of these in my bedroom and office.
Super adorable! What a great little area! I for sure need something like this at my house!
What a great idea. I like the idea of using spice racks as display pieces.
This is a great idea, and it’s good to get your son interested in reading from a young age. The corner looks so good, I’m sure he’s enjoying it.
I love this! It’s so important to instill a love of reading into our kids early, and this is one great way to do it!
It’s definitely a great way to do it. I love how it came out.
I love his reading corner. My toddler has a corner with her table that she does everything on. I do need to clean up her room though. 🙂
This is such a cute idea. I would love to have a reading corner.
This is actually a project I plan on doing really soon in our bonus room.
This is a super cute idea! I want all of my books to be out, and a quiet corner in which to read them.
I love this idea. My daughter loves to “read” but doesn’t have a designated space. She would love to have her own space to read.
Such a cute reading corner, I have one of my own!
I need to do this for my kids. We have many, many books too!
Awww this is bringing back memories of when my kids were little. We had a reading corner for them and they enjoyed it a lot. It’s great for kids to have their own space where they can go and do their own thing. My kids still like to read.
Such a cute reading space!! I love that your little one can reach too. I think it’s very cool.
My kids would all love this. If only I had a spare corner, lol.
My daughter would have loved a reading corner like this when she was little. Actually, I think she would still like one now!
Awesome job on this project. Very handy and useful.
those are super cute. I’ve seen them done with gutters too. I love diy and repurposing.
This is such a great idea and I love that it was so inexpensive! I have so many projects I need to tackle in my house…if only I had more time!
This is such a great idea. Kids need their own space to relax and enjoy some “them” time.
I’m in love with this little nook! You did a great job!
Those little Bekvam racks turned out perfectly! What a cute reading corner!
You can come over and set up a reading nook for me next! LOL
that is great! Love that idea! I love re-purposing items meant for one thing and used for another
How precious! This is a great idea. When they have access to books it helps them to become strong readers! And love to read!
Awesome job! Great way to encourage reading.
this is such an adorable reading corner! I love how the books are displayed
So clever and so easy to do. I like that your little one can access the books themselves….
When we have kids, I’m totally going to make one of these. I think the reading corners are too cool1
What an amazing idea and corner for your little toddler! It is truly priceless and refreshing to see kids loving books!
I love the idea of creating a reading corner for small children. It’s a great way to instill a love of learning in them.
What a fabulous idea! And they are perfect for his height. Would love to do this for my boys.
This is awesome – its like he has a mini library of his own haha!
I’m pinning because this is a great idea for my playroom make over. I love setting up 12 projects in 12 months. I have to try that for next year.
What a cute idea. And it sounds super easy. When we get the kids playroom finished I will have to do something like this.
I think toddler reading corners are always a great idea! My teen has one!
I Kia is great for that. This looks almost exactly like a reading nook that my niece used to have in her room when she was a toddler. It was also IKEA.
