I was recently contacted about trying McDonald’s new Chicken McNuggets. I was a little surprised by the initial contact, and even more surprised when I saw all of the changes McDonald’s has been making to their menu in the past two years. What makes the McNuggets “new”? Well, they’re no longer made with artificial preservatives. They also don’t contain artificial colors or flavors. All things that I would prefer not to have in my dinner.

It’s been a while since I’ve eaten the McNuggets and I figured this could be a fun outing with my son. (He had no idea why we were eating at McDonald’s for dinner last week other than I was solo parenting two kids, it was a busy night, and mommy needed a break…and a personal chef.)

I normally get my son a 4-piece Happy Meal, but I thought I’d try a 6-piece to see if he’d eat the whole thing. Happy Meals have come a long way since I was a kid, but one of the biggest changes is the fruit you can order with the Happy Meal. My boy loves apple slices and he prefers those to french fries. (You won’t find me complaining about that.) I find that the apple slices at other restaurants tend to be brown or past their expiration date, but that is not the case at McDonald’s.

One tip for those of you who may not want the 10-piece McNuggets meal….you can order a 6-piece meal. And that’s what I did last week. Did you know you can get Pure Honey as your dipping sauce? It’s really the only way I’ll eat the McNuggets.

This is where I have to admit that I was surprised by how good the McNuggets were! They were crispy and didn’t taste like frozen nuggets. They’re all white meat, which I prefer. (Side story…I had a friend in college and we would go to McDonald’s once a week and share nuggets. She would split them in half to see which were dark and which were white meat, and only eat the white meat McNuggets.)

My son ate all 6 of his McNuggets – and it’s usually a chore to get him to eat 4. I even told him he didn’t have to eat all 6, but he ate those and all of the apple slices.

My son prefers everything with ketchup – or ranch. I don’t think he’s tried nuggets with ranch, but he would probably like them that way, too.

There are so many food battles to fight as a parent, but this isn’t one I feel guilty about giving into. My kid is getting food without preservatives, added colors and flavors. He loves the apples and the chocolate milk (or regular milk, whichever one I’m feeling like that night.) And I get time with my boy and a break from cooking. It’s a win for both of us.
