Sometime in the past two years, my husband heard about this book, “One Year to an Organized Life.” It must have made it onto some top 10 list at the end of 2007 or early 2008. We were newly married and dealing with a lot of stuff.
When we lived in the two bedroom apartment, with less than 1000 square feet and very little closet space, the organization was key. The book takes you through month-by-month, and every evening we would do our “homework,” whether it was journaling or getting rid of items. The fourth week of the month usually led you to organizing. We organized our master bedroom, our living room, our kitchen and were just getting our guest room finished when we made the offer on our house. The book has a month for traveling, one month for scrapbooking, and even a month for moving. (I totally used it for moving.)
Our kitchen is smaller than the apartment’s kitchen, so organizing it has been an ordeal, but we kept some of our habits with the dishes. The bedroom is ok – the closets could definitely use a lot of work. And our office is relatively organized now. (The month we organized our files was AMAZING. We definitely still use that.) This week, I pulled the book back out to do some travel organizing. It’s going to help me pack just what we need and to not overpack (as much.) Because we’re not sure of the weather, we’ll be overpacking a little, but I don’t have to take as much “stuff” because we’re going to be on the go so often!
If you’re disorganized like me, and just need a little direction in your life, I highly recommend the book. (Amazon has it for under $12.) I’m even considering this book for my professional life.
