Or, rather, what did we do?
Sorry I’ve been missing here in blogland. I’ve had every intention of posting very cool posts (including a tour of my living room, updating you on our yard situation, a massive charity yard sale we held this weekend and Mother’s Day galore.) The yard situation kind of took a turn for the worse, and well….we didn’t have internet and television until late yesterday.
So let’s try to tell this story in order (at the very least.)
It’s been raining for days. Every. Single. Day. We need the rain, don’t get me wrong, but do we need it every day? And the one day it didn’t rain in the afternoon, we didn’t have a gas-powered mower to whack our lawn with. My mom’s mower stopped working over a week ago and we’re still dealing with the reel mower. Well, the grass was too high to mow with the reel mower.
I was pretty embarrassed by the yard on Saturday. Team in Training was holding a yard sale at our house, and someone even asked if the homeowner had someone to do their lawn. Um. Yeah. That person would be me. I was only slightly offended and I promised the stranger that I would be mowing that afternoon.
Wouldn’t you know…..it POURED Saturday afternoon!
We were out buying running shoes and as we left the store, I wondered if Wal-Mart carried lawn mowers. We thought we could get something halfway decent and headed to old Wal-Mart. I wish we had just gone home.
We bought the third cheapest mower – still spending $185. Got it home, set it up and did a test mow (by this time, the sun was out again, the yard was drying out and all was looking good.) Then Kenny ran over our water drainage pipe – destroying the cap on it. A few minutes later he hit our cable. I came home to him holding the cable and letting me know he didn’t know what it was for. I knew right away that it was our tv/internet – our connection to the outside world. 🙂
Twenty minutes later he was in the back yard and the mower just stopped. And it never started again. We had 75% of the yard mowed.
We packed up the mower, trekked back to Wal-Mart only to learn they wouldn’t take it back until the gas and oil had been taken out and it didn’t smell like gas anymore. (The mower sat outside yesterday with lids off, in hopes of getting rid of the smells.)
My mom ended up buying a new mower yesterday and I mowed her lawn and the rest of ours. I have blisters and a $185 of mess sitting in my driveway. I can handle the blisters. I can’t handle losing the money if that store won’t take it back tonight.
Let’s talk about Charter for a minute because I have to give them props where it’s due. I called them Saturday evening and told them about our situation. I talked to a guy named Jamie and he said they could send someone out on Wednesday between 3 and 5 p.m. Ergh. That means I would miss Desperate Housewives, Gossip Girl, Dancing with the Stars (twice), 90210 and possibly Lost if they didn’t have everything working on Wednesday! I handled it well and he told me that they would try to get an earlier appointment, but dispatchers weren’t in until Sunday morning.
I called back Sunday afternoon around 1:15 and asked if they had an appointment earlier than Wednesday. The guy said, “I’m showing a technician will be at your house TODAY between 3 and 5 p.m.” I said that was the best surprise I’ve ever received from them and wondered if they were ever going to call me to tell me that?
The Charter guy showed up promptly at 5:01 p.m. I was on my second pina colada and thanked him profusely. He spliced our cable, buried it even more (and closer to the house so we can’t mow over it) and went on his way.
We now have a pretty lawn AND internet! What began as a not-so-fun weekend turned out pretty decent.
There’s much more…..we planted several plants and are really starting to get into the landscaping thing. Pictures to come this week. Promise
